5 Easy Steps On How To Write A Blog In WordPress?

This article is intended for our clients that have just received their brand new website and are interested in blogging. Here is the basic step by step guide to starting your new blog.

1. Log into your WordPress Website

To get started you’ll first need to log into your WordPress website. To log into your WordPress website simply go to https://YourDomainName.com/wp-admin.
Then type in your Email or Username and your Password. If your website was done by “The Golden Arts” then you’ll find a copy of your login details in the PDF file sent to you upon completing your website.

2. Locate the “Posts” section

Now that you’re logged in please locate the post section to “Add New” blog or to “Edit” a pre-existing blog that we may have created for you. You’ll find the Posts section in the left hand column of your dashboard as seen below. To edit simply hover over the blog  title and the “Edit” option will appear. To add a new blog post simply click the “Add New” button at the top of the page.

3. Add title & Feature Image

At the top of the page you’ll see an area that says “Add title”, simply place your title there. Next on the right hand side locate the settings column. Make sure the “Post” option is selected. Then within this far right column scroll down until you see “Featured image” which is between the “Tags” and “Excerpt” options. Then select “Set featured image”. We recommend using consistent image sizes if you can help it. For example if your previous blog featured image was 1600px by 900px then keep the same size. You can use a free or premium canva.com  account to create images to match the size of your previous image. It is also recommended that you compress the image before uploading it to your website. Compressed images put less stress on your server because the file size is smaller. This leads to faster page loading speeds. Simply put, your site will load faster if you compress your images. To compress your featured image go to TinyJpg.com then click “Drag your .Png or .Jpg files here” then select the feature image you’re planning to upload and the image will be compressed automatically. After the image is successfully compressed a “download” link will appear on the right hand side. Click “download” to download the new selected image. Then go back to your “set featured image” option in WordPress and upload that image.

4. Add Content

Now it’s time to add content to the page. You can do so by pressing the “+” icon on the screen and select paragraph to add text. If you’re having difficulties with finding the “+” simply click anywhere with the editor and then  hit enter, then the “+” Should appear.  You can also add images within your blog by selecting “+” and then select “Browse all” and then find and select image. Repeat this process until you’re satisfied and you’ve completed the blog post.

5. Add Excerpt & Publish

The last step is to add a short summary of your blog post to the Excerpt section. This summary will be seen in search results such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. The Excerpt also displays in the metadata when you share the link to others. Yes that’s correct, when you or someone else shares your blog post the summary that’s within you excerpt displays.  To add a summary to the excerpt simply locate the right hand settings column again. From there scroll down until you see the Excerpt option. Then click the down arrow and add the summary text for the blog. Once completed select “Publish” at the top right hand side of the page.
