How to Point Name Servers from Godaddy to Bluehost?

In our earlier post How To Point Nameservers from Namecheap to Bluehost, we displayed how easy it is to point a domain from any domain registrar to Bluehost by simply changing the Domain Nameserver. However, many users who are not technical find it hard to follow the instructions without a clear screenshot of the domain registrar that they’re using. So we decided to create a easy to follow blog that will detail how to point a domain from GoDaddy to Bluehost.

So why point your nameserver from GoDaddy to Bluehost in the first place? Well, the answer is quite simple. You may have already purchased a Domain via Godaddy but you like the low cost and benefits that comes with one of Bluehost web hosting plans. So you simply want to use your pre-purchased domain name from Godaddy with Bluehost web hosting to take advantage of the hosting savings and/or the easy to navigate Bluehost interface.

Step 1

The obvious thing is to start by purchasing a Bluehost web hosting plan. You can do so by visiting Bluehost.com and then clicking > hosting > shared hosting and then scrolling down to view the plans or by simply clicking here. If you’re just starting out with a single website you may want to consider just going with the cheapest basic shared plan. This is the plan that we recommend to most of our clients. The main thing that you want to ensure is that the plan comes with a Free SSL Certificate and it has a good amount of storage. Which the basic plan currently takes care of that.

Next, click on the plan that best fits your needs and follow the process through. When you’re asked about your domain name enter your pre-existing domain name. Please be sure to double check for spelling errors. Lastly, on the checkout screen we usually tell our clients to ignore all of the extra addon’s. The basic plan to date comes with all of the required features. Follow this process all the way through, make sure your email address is correct too. After checkout, you will be prompted to create a account. Be sure to write down and remember your login credentials.

Step 2

Now the moment that you’ve been waiting for! After you’ve purchased hosting via Bluehost and created an account as summarized in step one, it’s now time to point your name servers to Bluehost.

Log in to your GoDaddy account, go to your Product section and within the “Domains” section select the domain you wish to point to your hosting account.

Here you’ll see a “DNS” or “Manage DNS” button like in the screenshot below, click on it.

Now on the next screen scroll down until you see the “Nameservers” section.

Here you might be seeing GoDaddy default nameservers

  • ns51.Domaincontrol.com
  • ns52.Domaincontrol.com

Now click on the “Change” button and then replace these GoDaddy nameservers with Bluehost name servers i.e.

  • ns1.bluehost.com
  • ns2.bluehost.com

While changing please be cautious about the Nameserver sequence.

ns1.bluehost.com (goes on the first line) and ns2.bluehost.com (goes on the second line).

That’s it, after replacing the nameservers it will take anywhere between 5 minutes to 24 hours to propagate the changes globally.

To double check your work you can visit DnsChecker.org (see screen shot below).

Then enter your domain as displayed below. Also make sure NS (Nameserver) is selected.

If you check back after awhile you’ll see that your NameSevers are updated to Bluehost. (See Below). As a reminder this can take sometime so be patient if you don’t see immediate changes.

Step 3

Now the next step is to log into your Bluehost account and add this domain and install WordPress from website tools inside your Bluehost cPanel. However, no worries if you’re reading this and coming from our Fiverr gig, just message us and we’ll start the order and take care of the rest from here. Simply click one of the images below and message us!
